Digital twins: testing a machine before it exists

A digital twin is a virtual model of a physical machine, line or process that mirrors it using real data. It lets engineers test ideas in software before applying them to expensive, running equipment.
Where it helps
- Design — validate reach, cycle time and collisions before the machine is built.
- Commissioning — test control logic against a simulated machine (virtual commissioning), so start-up on the real line is faster and safer.
- Operation — compare real performance to the model to spot drift and try improvements risk-free.
More than a 3D drawing — and now standardised
A digital twin is not just a static 3D model; it is connected to real behaviour and data, so it stays useful throughout the machine’s life. The concept now has a formal framework in ISO 23247 (digital twin framework for manufacturing), and organisations such as NIST publish practical guidance — useful anchors so a “digital twin” project means the same thing to everyone involved.
Starting small
You do not need to model the whole plant. Even a simulation of one new cell — used to validate the sequence and shorten commissioning — captures much of the value and reduces the risk of surprises on the floor.
